Aldwick Bumper Community Day is big success

Having fun in Aldwick was as easy as ABC. The first Aldwick Bumper Community Day to be held in Rose Green was a big success.

Hundreds of visitors enjoyed the chance to look around 33 stalls and side shows, play crazy golf and watch various displays on Avisford Park recreation ground.

Lilian Richardson, the amenities committee chairman of Aldwick Parish Council, said: "It's been a very good day and we will be repeating it again next year here at Avisford Park.

"It is the first community day we have held in Rose Green after two others elsewhere.

"We thought it was about time we staged an event here for the people who live in this area."

Last Saturdayafternoon's fete featured dancing from the Aziza Egyptian dance troupe who enchanted the spectators with their colourful and rhythmic movements.

The Miller Men provided plenty of jazz to get feet tapping, while Adrian Wright conjured up some extra time for his magic show because the children were so enthralled by his tricks. Among the stalls were those for Fair Trade and the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre.

Willowhale Farm Residents' Association was also present. Chairman John Bass said: "We've had a very good day. We've gained six new members in addition to the 235 we had this morning. We are building up our strength each day and people are really supporting us."

The association is talking to MP Nick Gibb and housing association Places for People, which owns much of the Willowhale estate, about creating a community trust to take on the allotments and ensure their long-term survival. This follows the association's success earlier this summer in saving the allotments from being developed.

But Mr Bass said the fight still went on to stop garages being demolished for housing.
