Aldwick's anti-speed campaign

A week's worth of an anti-speeding campaign is being bought by Aldwick Parish Council.

Members agreed to spend 500 on hiring the speed indication device, or SID, and its accompanying staff.

The mobile device flashes a warning to motorists who are driving too fast.

Parish councils in the Bognor Regis area are being offered the use of SID for free for up to a week at a time. Their members, or other residents, can volunteer for training to work the device and ensure its safety.

But the staffing can be hired under the scheme put forward by the Arun Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.

Council chairman Cllr Dr Jim Ramage said the scheme was worth trying. 'We do get asked questions about speeding in Nyetimber Lane from time to time as well as Barrack Lane and Marine Drive West,' he stated.

The cost of the campaign could come from the council's 7,600 traffic calming budget. Cllr Jan Behr offered to be trained as a volunteer if needed.

But Cllr Tony Poland said he believed using SID would be a waste of time. 'Once motorists have gone past it, their speed will go up again,' he claimed.
