Alfred, 92, attends opening of new Bognor gym

ALFRED White showed how to keep fit at 92 when he took part in the official opening of a new Bognor Regis gym.

Mr White is a regular at the fitness suite in the Laburnum Centre.

He attends twice a week for about an hour each time.

The West Meads former teacher said: “I’ve been coming to the gym since I joined the centre about 11 years ago.

“This new gym is really nice. I go on all the equipment – the treadmill, the cycling machine, the rowing machine, the multi-gym and the treadmill.

“It’s nothing too energetic but it keeps my arms and legs moving so I can get about.”

He is among 234 members who have signed up for the gym since it opened late last year in the Lyon Street activity centre by Age UK West Sussex for over 50s.

The fully-equipped facility – which cost about £20,000 – was declared open by Arun District Council chairman Dennis Wilde.

He said: “I am sure this will be a wonderful asset for you all in the future.”

A group of 12 gym members put on a dancing display led by instructor Jackie Foard to show their fitness to those at the ceremony.

They were joined for the routine by the town’s mayor, Jim Brooks.
