Alfriston

EAST OR WEST?: I left the village this week (a rare occurrence recently) and headed West, not to the West End, where you would have found me in a previous life but to West Sussex in search of Eleanor Farjeon. As we tracked along the continuous chain that is the South Downs, the spirit of the downs changed subtly. It was a gentle reminder that in Sussex there is so much variety, enough to last a lifetime. Unfortunately this was yet another example of rushing out of the door without the camera and unable to capture any of the gorgeousness. Fortunately for me Sussex has talented artists in abundance and their work can be found in the village this weekend along with the usual madness and mayhem that is the Alfriston Summer Festival

FESTIVAL ART EXHIBITION: A large number of paintings (including, lucky for me, East and West Sussex scenes) by talented local artists will be on display in the Old Chapel Centre today (Friday), Saturday and Sunday 10.30am to 5.30pm and Monday 10.30am to 5pm. Many will be for sale at realistic prices and entry is free. Pop along for a little piece of inspiration. The art exhibition is this year part of ArtWave. If the art exhibition inspires you to search out more pieces of Sussex for your home, stop off at Alfriston Arts where more work by local artists and an eclectic mix of mediums can be found.

FAMILY FUN TODAY: It’s Children’s Day on The Tye and free. Bring a picnic from 1pm (there is a wet weather marquee), meet the amazing animals at the Jaws and Claws Animal Handling Workshop. Fun and games for all ages can be found throughout the afternoon.

REVUE 2016 TONIGHT: August has galloped past and the Bank Holiday festival is here once more. So much is planned and the village has been a hive of industry putting together sketches, checking games have survived the winter and naturally baking a lot of cakes. To kick off the weekend and to see the year in revue join the Alfriston Players for an evening of the ridiculous, laughter and musical entertainment. The War Memorial Hall tonight (Friday) at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 and can be bought from The Apiary. Longman Brewery will be providing suitable refreshments.

FUN, FROLICS AND BLESSINGS: throughout the village. Of course there will be bunting, the shops will be open, tea and stronger refreshments can be found pretty much everywhere and whatever the weather there is plenty to entertain the whole family this weekend so visit Alfriston and unleash your inner child. Even your dog can be blessed on Sunday at 11am and they could become the star of the show, the dog show that is on Sunday at 2pm, kindly run this year by Waifs and Strays. Visit the village website for listings and timings of all events http://www.alfriston-village.co.uk/festival.

CLERGY HOUSE FREE ENTRY: On Monday traditionally the day of the village fete, the Clergy House will be open and free to all.

BOOT FAIR AND PARKING: All day parking can be found on Monday at the Recreation Ground £2 with the annual Boot Fair. Open to sellers from 7am (£8) and open to all not from 7.30am. Park up and grab a bargain then join in the village entertainment.

ALL ROADS TO ALFRISTON: Are open so please ignore any road closed signs from Seaford. East Sussex County Council have assured us the road will be open both ways despite any confusing signs that may still be out and no road works will be taking place Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

FUN RUN: We regret to advise, due to unforeseen circumstances the fun run has been cancelled, however this will be rescheduled so watch this space.

MUCH ADO ABOUT SEPTEMBER: Andy Hamilton will be reading from his book The Star Witness on Wednesday September 21 at Deans Place Hotel. Described by Jack Dee as ‘like its author this book is funny, poignant and too short’. This promises to be a very funny evening. Tickets cost £10 including a generous discount on the price of the book. Secure your place either in person at Much Ado Books or learn more http://www.muchadobooks.com/andy-hamilton.php

VALUATION DAY: As we look to September the village diary is filling up already and more of this next week. However if you find yourself clearing out your attics or garages for the Boot Sale this weekend and come across a likely treasure, put it aside ready for Eastbourne Auction Valuation Day in aid of St Andrew’s Restoration September 25.
