All aboard for Sompting rail exhibition

Hundreds of model railway enthusiasts attended a new locomotive exhibition this month at Sompting Village Hall in West Street.

The Sompting and District Model Railway show was visited by train lovers of all ages, with a number of exhibits based on railway designs across the world.

Co-organiser Matthew Ayling, 45, of 13 Penhill Road, is a member of Sompting and District Model Railway Club, joining with his son six years ago.

He said: “The show went really well. We had about 14 model railways with some exhibitors travelling from as far afield as Kent to exhibit. It was a really excellent exhibition and was well attended by the public.

“Little kids always like trains, but our oldest member is in his 90’s. It is great for the kids and the elderly alike and great to see people of all ages enjoying it.”

Around 200 people attended the exhibition over the weekend from May 14-15, and admired handmade displays including the Sussex countryside, Japanese high-speed rails, and antique tracks through the African desert.

Matthew added: “Our biggest model was about six feet along, so there is a lot of detail that goes into them. My favourite was the Sussex countryside, it was lovely and my friend who made it spent over a year on it.”
