All-action Colleges Week

Bexhill College had a busy time during Colleges Week with activities both on and off the campus.

Art students attended the Ben Nicholson exhibition at the De La Warr Pavilion where they were led by artist Alice Flight and tutor Julie Clark.

The students took part in a workshop which featured experimental drawing and discussions about the work and its context in modern art.

The mathematics department entered a Senior Maths challenge and took a team of four students to the University of Brighton.

The tasks were extremely challenging and taken under strict time limits.

The college finished in 12th place out of 21.

Head of Maths Rick Grahame said "The field contained many independent schools including Rhodean and Lancing College so we see this as a great achievement for our students."

Sports teacher Matt Hellier was involved in a 24 hour aerobics session to raise money for the Stroke Association - this epic event raised over 700 for the charity.

With energy and cost saving at the forefront of debate, Health and Social services took a field trip with pupils from St Richards School to Aylesford paper mill to learn how papers and magazines are recycled.

Hospitality, Travel and Tourism pupils got involved by providing ploughman's lunches and sausage rolls as part of their customer care unit.

Other events included an information afternoon for careers consultants as well as "Love in a Box", a national initiative picked up by the college's BTEC Early Years students which involves sending gifts to underprivileged children in Eastern Europe.

Principal Karen Hucker said "Colleges Week is all about demonstrating how important colleges are in their communities. This week's activities have shown what a difference the college can make in addition to its obvious educational benefits. It was great to see so many people involved in such a variety of ways".
