For years, damp and leaks have caused damage to some of its artefacts. It is hoped Lottery fund cash will be available for work to start this winter to resurface the Esplanade promenade which runs over half of the Tower's moat.

Seaford Museum public liaison officer Mick Barratt said: 'This should provide a dry area for the many exhibits which are currently suffering in a very damp atmosphere.

'The work also involves building some support pillars inside the moat, which means everything in this area will need moving and will not be available for the public until next spring.

'As a temporary measure museum staff are re-shuffling display cases to try to get a good selection of items within the tower itself, which will remain open through this period.'

Upcoming Seaford Museum and Heritage Society events include an illustrated talk, entitled New Developments at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard, by Julian Thomas, at the Little Theatre, Seaford, on October 26 at 7.30pm.
