All smiles as friendly club celebrates its 50th birthday

Friendships during the decades have been celebrated at a Walberton club's golden jubilee.

The 50 years of Walberton Friendly Club were enjoyed in the most appropriate way '“ a cake, a drink, a natter and two informative guest speakers.

The club has a regular membership of 25 individuals who go along to its meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at the village hall.

Secretary Thelma Brown said the club lived up to its name. "We are very friendly and we have lots of activities and outings," she stated.

"People enjoy that. A lot of our members live on their own and getting together once a month is a chance to catch up with each other's news."

The club began in 1959 as The Evergreens. Its name was changed to its present title just over ten years ago. Anyone aged over 50 from Walberton and the surrounding villages is entitled to join.

The 50th birthday party will soon be followed, with help from Walberton Parish Council, by the installation of a commemorative seat outside the village hall.

A committee of eight volunteers runs the club and arranges the meetings with speakers, such as those from the Sue Ryder charity at the anniversary gathering, and the trips out.

Most are for short journeys but some, such as a forthcoming break on the Isle of Wight, are held over four days.
