Students at Bexhill Academy were treated to a performance in school by actors from The Globe Theatre.

Year 10 pupils watched a performance of ‘The Merchant of Venice’ from the actors, after studying the play earlier in the year in their English lessons.

Three actors, Phil Cox, Phoebe Pryce, Christopher Logan and stage manager Ian Farmery visited the academy from the Globe Theatre in London, on Wednesday April 20.

The visit included a performance from scenes from Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice and also a question and answer session with the students.

Hannah Simon, Head of English at Bexhill Academy said: “I think it’s really important for the students to actually see Shakespeare being performed, after all, that is why it was written.

“There are both funny and serious moments in The Merchant of Venice, which sometimes doesn’t translate through reading the text alone, although the play has serious themes and messages in it; I hope that the students can understand the different layers.”

A few students were given the opportunity to perform with the actors, and helped to fill in for parts in the play.

Year 10 student Julia Laszczyksaid: “Seeing the play has really helped me to understand it more. It is a lot easier to understand the language when an actor is speaking it instead of reading it in your head.”

Phoebe Pryce explained “All of the costumes you see on stage are made as they would have been in Shakespeare’s time. There’s no Velcro unfortunately. Everything has a hook and eye closure, making quick changes very stressful.”
