Allotment holders in Aldwick fight back in the war on crime

A crime prevention campaign should make Aldwick's allotment holders safer against thieves.

Dozens of items of equipment used on the 21 plots at The Nurseries were treated with Smartwater by two police community support officers during a visit last Saturday.

The liquid is wiped on to the item and a log kept of its use to provide a unique record of the equipment and its location. This can then be compared to any items found in suspicious circumstances.

The equipment treated ranges from a wheelbarrow and a water bowser to pairs of garden shears, rakes, hoes and shovels.

The busy two-hour session formed part of the Allotment Watch crime prevention scheme launched by PCSO Justina Baker last spring.

The allotments are owned by Aldwick Parish Council and form part of the annual entry into the South and South East of England in Bloom competition.

The enthusiasts are hoping to better last year's silver gilt success by clinching gold. The judges will be touring Aldwick on the morning of July 3 to look at the colourful displays.

The two Rose Green schools, Barrack Lane and Marine Park Gardens will be among the places on their itinerary.
