Ambulance driver fined for causing pile-up

An ambulance driver who swerved to avoid an animal in the road and caused a three-car pileup in Bognor Regis has been fined £200.

Steven Bousfield, who has been an ambulance driver for five years, swerved to avoid a 'creature' on the road, and went into oncoming traffic on the other side of the road.

The incident, which also involved a third car being hit, happened on April 30 on Chichester Road.

Both the drivers of the other cars received head and neck injuries, and bruising.

Bousfield, of Stanford Close, Bognor Regis, pleaded guilty at Chichester Magistrates Court to driving without due care and attention.

The 36-year-old was on his way home at 7.55am after doing a night shift at work. He told police he had not fallen asleep or lost concentration.

Defending, Thomas Cooke, said: "He's extremely sorry for what's happened. It's had a horrific effect on him, he's suffered from depression."

The court heard he had held a clean driver's licence for 18 years. For the offence he had six points put on his licence, was fined 200, ordered to pay a 15 victim surcharge and court costs of 43.
