Amended plans for Archery Ground development in St Leonards approved

Revised plans for the redevelopment of the former Hastings College of Arts and Technology site in St Leonards have been given the go-ahead, despite residents' objections.

Developers were granted permission to build 121 new homes in December 2013.

Applicants submitted a revised scheme with the same number of homes, which was discussed at a council planning meeting yesterday evening (Wednesday, July 27).

Amendments include removal of all roof terraces from the affordable housing and using UPVC windows instead of aluminium.

Lee Wilson, of campaign group Save The Archery Ground (STAG), said: “None of us has ever opposed housing on the land. But the new owners are using this application to project new amendments which will impact on the conservation area.

“It’s been recognised by a former Secretary of State as having national importance.

“It’s been a seven-year battle to get a decent housing scheme on the Archery Ground and it would be a betrayal for the town if this scheme was compromised.”

Marcus Beale, of Marcus Beale Architects, representing the developers, said: “These are small changes to the scheme designed to make it more agreeable and improve access.”
