PEACEHAVEN amenity land recently used as a campsite by travellers is to be sold.

The site to the north of Arundel Road, bordered by Piddinghoe Avenue and Piddinghoe Close, was vacated by travellers in June.

The land had previously been used by community groups including an archery club and was originally earmarked for a new primary school.

However, demand for school places was less than expected and additional spaces were supplied by the recent revamps at Peacehaven and Telscombe Cliffs primary schools.

As a result East Sussex County Council has declared the land surplus. All money from the sale of the land will be added to the pot available for funding schemes in the council's capital programme.

However, Peacehaven Town Council clerk Sheila Baker said it was concerned yet more land ideal for recreational use would vanish.

She said: 'The council feels the Arundel Road land should be kept as an area for the town to extend the Sports Park so we can have more facilities for sports such as rugby and cricket.'

It was recently revealed that land at the rear of The Joff will also be lost when it is developed into all-weather sports pitches for the new Peacehaven Community School.
