An emblem of our success in Aldwick

A logo is being sought to sum up the appeal of one of Aldwick's most popular places.

The symbol will be used by the recently-formed Friends of West Park for its work improving the open space.

Creative residents have been invited to draw an emblem which visualises the group's purpose.

West Park is owned by Arun District Council and is probably best-known for playing host to community events.

The biggest current occasion which takes place there is the annual Bognor Prom 10k road race every May.

But, besides the large events, West Park has a vital daily role to play by providing a 40,000sq m open space in which people can run, walk, exercise their dogs and take their children to the play area.

The site also boasts a cafe and a car park and provides a route to the seafront on the opposite side of Marine Drive West.

The Friends group was started earlier this year to increase the appreciation and knowledge of the park's users while protecting and improving its environment.

The group has six officers '“ Dee Christensen, Iain Fraser, Fran Holt, Gill Hutchison, Kat Hutchison and John Knight '“ chosen from the 48 people who went along to the inaugural meeting.

Mr Fraser said: "We are all keen to conserve and develop the park and promote its wildlife habitats and area of open space as a community resource.

"We also want to encourage its use by local people as a place for recreation, enjoyment and study, including practical conservation work and encouragement of entertainment and educational events."

The Friends has produced an introductory leaflet about its purposes as well as announcing the logo competition. The design will be used on the Friends' official communications.
