Anger as farmers left to go bankcrupt

West Sussex farmers are still waiting for payments due to them under the Common Agricultural Policy, which have been outstanding for livestock farmers for 15 months and six months for arable farmers.

Most farmers have had to take out loans in the interim to bridge them over until their payment comes through in what is a major crisis in agriculture.

National chairman of the Tenant Farmers' Association, Reg Haydon, who farms at North Stoke, said: "The whole situation is extremely serious. A total of 93,000 farmers nationally are still waiting for payment. Farmers are in real trouble, with debts rising and bills unpaid."
