AN attempt to provide a Peacehaven children s recreation area has been scuppered after part of the land was sold to another bidder.

It was hoped both play and ball games areas could be built on an empty plot in Collingwood Close, but the Sussex Housing Group, which was negotiating to buy the land, was pipped at the post by another bidder.

Peacehaven Town Council member Sue Grffiths was furious. She said: Local residents have fought long and hard for this play area and having gained planning permission thought that next year there would be a safe place on the estate for their children to play.

Because the remaining land is no longer big enough for both a ball games and play area one of them may have to be scrapped.

Cllr Griffiths added: Now we will have to choose between a play area or a ball games area as the remaining site isn t big enough for both. The children and young people on the estate both deserve an area of their own and we will now have to look at other areas in Trafalgar Close and Collingwood Close, but there is nothing quite as good as the one we have lost.

Mel Pearse, who lives next door to the site, also wanted to see it used to benefit the town s youngsters, she said: The land has been left derelict for years and children who play there are at risk from broken glass and other rubbish.

All we wanted was for the area to be cleaned up and made into a safe place for our children to play. Now some spoilsport has taken that opportunity away from them.
