Alan Bain started the criticism when he complained about cars parked outside Christ Church Primary School on Friday.

Now a parent of two children, one at Robsack Wood Nursery and another at the primary academy, Rachel Rawles is angry about people the amount of traffic and illegal parking around the school at peak times.

“We walk to school every day and it is so dangerous for us who try to cross the road when people park on zig zags,” she said.

“This week there was a brakes catering lorry delivering bang on school morning drop off time, making it awful to cross the road to avoid the lorry, parked cars and cars driving past.

“Traffic wardens come regularly but it still not enough.

“About five to eight cars park with disabled badges on the zigzags.

“I understand they are blue badge holders but that takes up the whole of the outside school entrance making it hazardous.

“And vehicles park all on the pavements making it impossible to walk through.

“It’s too big of a school for the surrounding area to cope with the influx of parents at school start and finish times.”

Jo Pope complained about a similar situation at Broad Oak Community Primary School.

“There are always people who park on the zigzag lines outside the school, plus parking on the corner of Reedswood Road so cars cannot get in and out of the road properly,” she said.

“There is always plenty of parking further up the road either in Reedswood Road or the main road but I guess people are just too lazy to walk a bit further when dropping their children off or they are late for school.

“My grandchildren go to St Mary’s Star of the Sea and they don’t seem to have people parking on the zigzags, probably because they have a lollipop man who sees the children cross the road in front of the school, but drivers park on double yellow lines just across the street.”

Sussex Police condemned the laziness of drivers who park on the zigzags and said they regularly patrol schools to stop this happening at the time.

“Parking in restricted areas for the sake of a few minutes’ walk is just laziness and is plainly hazardous to children arriving or leaving school,” a spokesman said.

“Officers from the neighbourhood policing teams and road policing regularly check schools around starting and finishing times and vehicles parked illegally will be ticketed.

“Any schools experiencing parking problems should speak to their school liaison officer or local neighbourhood team.”
