Anger over rowing club plans

THE proposed new Bexhill Rowing Club building will ruin one of the most precious areas of open space on the seafront, say concerned neighbours.

Dozens of residents in Wilton Court, Shellbourne House and Channel View are angrily opposing the plan to build a new two-storey clubhouse next to the sailing club at Marina.

They reckon it will block sea views, create traffic and parking problems and destroy that part of the seafront's thriving pavement cafe culture.

And they've blanketed the town with posters illustrating how the building might look to assist their argument.

The news comes at a time when another row is brewing about the possible loss of open space to a hotel complex on the putting green next to the De La Warr Pavilion.

Residents in the seafront flats currently have a fine view of the beach, sea and sailing boats, as do customers at the five cafes and restaurants on that stretch.

They say it would be 'horrific' if that amenity was lost and think the rowing club should look elsewhere for a new site.

The club has only recently submitted the plans for the 700,000 project to Rother District Council.

The council's public consultation period runs until Tuesday.
