The duo worked tirelessly throughout their year, organising a host of fundraisers including a car boot sale, Christmas carol concert, race night, a quiz and the most successful, a charity golf day and dinner.

Susie De Las Casas, a member of the golf club, also contributed £1,615 through sponsorship of her Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle challenge plus a further £403.25 in Gift Aid.

Speaking of why they picked the society to help, Gordon said: “We chose Alzheimer’s Society as some members, including Ina and I, have been touched by the devastating effects of dementia

“By selecting Alzheimer’s Society as charity of the year, we have helped increase awareness at the club and raised vital funds for such an important cause.”

Ina described how she had been touched by the terrible effects of the condition. “I have had the experience of witnessing intelligent, capable friends slowly lose everyday abilities like talking and their memory and with it the ability to recognise their nearest and dearest.

“Alzheimer’s Society helps people live well with dementia and provides local services to those living with dementia and their carers in Sussex, while leading the way in dementia research.”

The pair wished to thank everyone who helped them during their year.

Hannah Miller, community fundraiser at Alzheimer’s Society, said the society was extremely grateful for all Gordon and Ina’s efforts. “As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like those at Ham Manor to help us support people to live well with dementia today and fund research to find a cure for tomorrow.”

The new captains for this year are Keith Latham and Joan Clayton.

They are fundrasing for Midhurst-based animal charity K9 Partners.
