Angmering students enjoy live German show

CIRCUS tricks, drama and rap battles probably aren’t the most obvious ingredients for school German lessons.

But for amused students at The Angmering School, they proved to be the perfect recipe, when the Flying Theatre Company stopped by for a special, one-off show on Wednesday last week (January 18).

More than 250 year-seven and eight students enjoyed an entertaining live show – performed entirely in German.

Students were transported to a small village in the heart of Germany, by the enthusiastic cast of the play.

The show featured a lively mix of music, acting and circus tricks, during which two students, Lorena Haste, 11, and Bayley Jordan, 13, were coaxed from their seats, to take part in a German “rap battle”.

Sarah Gittus, key stage three subject leader for modern foreign languages at the school, said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for students to see how to communicate in a foreign language and hear German being used in a lively and entertaining setting.”

Student Becky Edwards, 12, said: “I learnt lots of new vocabulary and I found it very entertaining. They also kept it to our level in German, which was really good.

“I would say the best bit was when Bayley and Lorena danced with the actors.”

The company, founded in 1990, has been touring theatres and schools across Europe, for more than 20 years, taking a fresh and inventive spin on the traditional play to countless youngsters.

A spokesman for the company said that the main aim of the show was to break down cultural barriers through the use of language and drama.

It was hoped to leave a lasting impression on the students, which would motivate them to explore other cultures and stimulate their interest in learning another language, so they may one day be able to benefit from all their acquired knowledge.
