Angmering villagers’ support helps fundraising idea grow

But Angmering villagers had other ideas and although that first idea fell flat, it built into something much bigger and better.

Sally, 35, from East Preston, explained: “Initially, I had thought that I would offer an ironing service to try to raise money for essential equipment that she needs but the response from our community has been overwhelming.

“I will now be doing a fundraising event at the Angmering Sports and Social Club with the help of our big-hearted community.”

Six-year-old Erin Duffy was born ten weeks premature. She had an infection which caused a brain injury, resulting in quadriplegic spastic cerebral palsy.

“All four limbs, her torso and head control are affected,” said Sally.

“She was able to communicate through speech quite well until about a year ago, when she lost this skill and regressed significantly, but it doesn’t stop her from trying to get her wants and needs across.

“She has a smile that can light up the room. She has a personality that is unlike any other I know. She is so funny that she can have a room full of adults in stitches.”

Erin needs a new car seat, costing £2,220, and Sally has set that as her target.

She posted on the Angmering Village Facebook page, promoting her plans to do an ironing marathon.

But the support she received in response means that instead, a big charity fun day is being planned at the club in Decoy Drive, Angmering, on Saturday, October 31, from 10am to 1pm. There will be a bake sale, children’s fancy dress disco from 11.30am to 12.30pm, raffle and other activities. Members of the local football team will also be having their legs waxed.

Sally said: “I have literally been overwhelmed by the response I’ve had from people. I did offer my ironing service, but no one wanted it. They have been so generous financially, physically and with giving up their time for the fun day instead. The support has been amazing.”

Erin and her older brothers, Ellis and Jayden, will be travelling with their mum Shelley from their home on the outskirts of London to go to the fun day.
