Animal charity's plea for help

A BEXHILL animal charity is itself in need of some kindness - offers of help to assist in looking after animals and running the sanctuary's gift shop in St Leonard's Road.

Barby Keel (pictured), who founded the sanctuary in Freezeland Lane that bears her name, was typically blunt about the crisis now confronting the charity, which provides a refuge for lost or rejected animals and fowls while trying to find good homes for them.

Barby said: “In the past few weeks we’ve just been inundated with animals that need looking after. It’s not just pets being rejected after Christmas, but people being unable to afford to keep them or with changed circumstances.

“We are getting referrals from all sorts of animal welfare organisations, and the staff we’ve got to look after the animals and to keep our fund-raising shop going are finding it harder and harder to keep up. Frankly, we could do with some more volunteers, and quickly.”

Barby added: “Even if someone could give us an hour or two of their time every week it would make such a difference. All I ask is that they are trustworthy and reliable - if they say they’ll turn up, they do.”

Anyone able to help is asked to contact Barby without delay on 01424 219593 (shop) or 01424 222032 (sanctuary). Donations of cash or animal food are also welcome.
