Runnymede Court, which is owned and managed by Hanover Housing Association, has won a national award for being the most pet friendly.

The estate beat off competition from more than 800 entries for the 2013 Cinnamon Trust Awards.

Jean Fountain, 82, was very grateful for the help she received when she fell over and broke her hip whilst walking her dog, a long haired Chihuahua.

After spending time in hospital Jean made the decision she would no longer be able to care for Sparky and asked estate manager Karen Baker to adopt him. Karen agreed but brings Sparky to visit Jean daily.

Karen said: “Having Sparky not only provides Jean with a companion but also the incentive to keep mobile as she gets to walk with him daily.

“Sparky also helps to keep Jean in touch with other people on the estate. When she is out walking with him it gives her the chance to socialise with other residents, catching up on the news and having a laugh with neighbours.

Pets are an important part of a resident’s life providing much needed companionship and a link to others.”
