Annie Get Your Gun - a theatrical treat at DLW

From the moment the overture begins to play at the De La Warr Pavilion we know that we’re in for a theatrical treat; an old favourite that stills feels as fresh as gun smoke.

Annie Get Your Gun has been cleverly updated and adapted from it’s premiere seventy years ago and from the Betty Hutton, Howard Keel film version. This production is the revival seen on Broadway in 1999. The music, wonderfully lead by musical director Trevor Sheldrake, is toe-tapping and energetic with witty lyrics and neat choreography by choreographer, Melodie Squire.

With classic show tunes such as There’s No Business Like Show Business and Anything You Can Do, the cast are given hundreds of chances to shine; and they take each opportunity by the horns.

Kitson Wellard plays Frank Butler, a womanising gun-slinger with a lovably cocky attitude. Jessica Roberts steals the show as the uneducated, but altogether charming, Annie Oakley. Wellard and Roberts are made for these roles and their natural chemistry allows their love story to unfold smoothly.

A fine cast of supporting actors complete the ensemble.

There is a Disney-like innocence to this show and it is ideal for youngsters, with plenty to keep adults entertained.

Judy Welsh has directed a vibrant, colourful show full of character, charm and good old-fashioned fun. The show runs until Saturday June 28.
