Up to 20 other passengers saw the pair punched in the face by a man as the bus pulled in to Pelham Rise. The attacker then got off the bus and fled.

PC Paul Whitney said: There were 15 to 20 people on the top deck of the bus at this time, some who are known to have information regarding the identity of the offender. To date only two persons have come forward to give evidence.

If anyone was on the top deck of the last bus from Brighton please come forward, quoting a proverb he added, all that is required for the triumph of evil is for the good to do nothing .

PC Whitney can be contacted at Newhaven Police Station on 0845 6070999.
