Appeal for volunteers

A FRESH appeal has been made for volunteers to help out at a Heathfield day centre.

Holdenhurst Centre, in Mill Road, is this month looking to increase its opening hours from one day a week to two. However, the centre, which is currently open only on Tuesdays, needs people to help out on Fridays too.

The centre has been a massive success since first opening its doors in November last year. Pensioners in Heathfield, who until then had to travel to Polegate or Crowborough for day care, were for the first time able to meet in their own town.

The centre's organiser, Sandy Richards, said: 'We want to open up but we can't until we've got enough volunteers. Helpers would spend their time chatting, playing games and making cups of tea and coffee for the residents. Just having fun really. Volunteers don't need any particular qualifications, they just need to like older people.'

The centre is open from 10am to 4pm. Volunteers can help out for the whole day, or just morning or afternoon if they so wish. They can offer their services each week or every other week. Volunteer drivers are also sought. If you are interested in helping out, contact Sandy Richards on 01273 476704.
