Police are appealing for witnesses after two men smashed their way into a cash machine to steal thousands of pounds in Polegate.
Two men in black hoodies attacked the machine at the Tesco Express store in Eastbourne Road, Polegate, with a metal bar before forcing it open and grabbing bank notes, police said.
Police said CCTV footage shows the offence took several hours to complete.
It is believed the men may have moved away from the machine whenever they saw traffic approaching and then returned to it when they felt safe.
They escaped on foot towards the rear of the Tesco store.
Officers are considering the possibility that they may have had an accomplice elsewhere in the road who alerted them to approaching traffic.
The theft happened between 2am and 5am on Saturday July 27.
Police said the two thieves were both white and of average height and build.
They were wearing black clothing and what appears to be hoodies with a cap underneath or hoodies with a fixed peak.
One was wearing black gloves and the other white.
The CCTV image shows one of the men attacking the machine.
PC Kelley Matthews said: “The two men spent a considerable amount of time attacking the machine to break it open so it is possible that a number of people saw them tampering with it.
“Others may have seen the men standing nearby and acting suspiciously in the moments between their attempts to get it open.
“Please come forward if you have any information about what happened, no matter what it is.”
