Approval for 36 affordable homes in Peasmarsh

Plans for 36 affordable homes in the middle of Peasmarsh were given the go-ahead by the council this morning (Thursday, June 30).

Amicus Horizon’s proposal to demolish the existing homes on The Maltings and replace them with 17 houses and a block of flats was approved by Rother District Council’s planning committee.

The planning permission is subject to the developers addressing a number of issues councillors identified including drainage problems and some of the designs.

Committee chairman Cllr Brian Kentfield found fault in the layout of the first floor flats which are designated be for older people.

The Bexhill Kewhurst ward member believed the windows were too high for those in wheelchairs to use and the size of the rooms.

Cllr Joy Hughes echoed his concerns. “The rooms are small and if our older person doesn’t get out much, then they are confined to that room and will spend their whole lives there,” she said.

Cllr Mary Barnes added: “Why can’t we have some decent designs? It seems the elderly must live in homes no one would want to live in. I think it’s very important they [Amicus] go back to the drawing board and get something people would want to live in.”

Peasmarsh Parish Council opposed the plans along with 61 objection letters, but councillors decided to approve it.

Amicus now has the green light to build the 12 two-bed houses, four three-bed houses, one two-bed bungalow and 19 flats, all of which will be affordable.
