West Sussex County Council has replaced the boards - which depict the departure times of buses - with five new smaller displays at each departure bay.

A council spokesman said: “People told the county council that sun glare on one of the former displays made it difficult to read. The replacement is a larger, daylight-readable summary screen, listing all upcoming departures.”

The £25,000 installations were funded through developer contributions.

Bob Lanzer, county cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “We always listen to feedback from the public and were pleased that, in this instance, we were able to make improvements.”

Bus operators have equipment that tracks where their buses are, using the Global Positioning System - GPS. The location data is then fed to West Sussex County Council’s ‘Real Time Passenger Information’ system.

The actual location of the bus is compared to where it is scheduled to be and the predicted time of arrival is calculated. This information is then shown on the displays.
