LOCAL PLAN: Issues and Options, water treatment and microbeads. Within the emerging Local Plan, an appropriate level of infrastructure will be essential. A suitable level of treated water to cater for the increase in population, which is being mandated by central Government for Wealden, means new sewerage treatment plants will be required. Amongst the Wealden Local Plan proposals probably there will be a proposal for a new treatment plant. An option is to place this upstream to Arlington Reservoir. Parishioners drink treated water from the existing reservoir. Cosmetic companies use microbeads in some products, microbeads are plastic. Microbeads are too small to be filtered effectively by sewerage treatment plants. This means parishioners would end up ingesting plastic from the local water supply. Members of the House of Commons environmental audit committee have recently called for a ban on microbeads within 18 months but apparently the cosmetic industry is resisting this ban insisting instead on a '˜voluntary' code. ROADWORKS: Between today, Friday, and September 9, in Station Road, Berwick, opposite Shabbards, there will be roadworks involving some carriageway incursions.

FLOWER SHOW: Arlington and Upper Dicker Produce and Flower Show tomorrow, Saturday, starting at 3pm in Arlington Village Hall. Fun event for all ages in the spirit of ‘have a go’. Classes for vegetables, fruit, flowers, flower arranging, cookery, children’s classes and craftwork. BERWICK VILLAGE: Planning application at BN26 6TA. A major planning application WD/2016/1659 has been submitted for land at Station Farm in Berwick for 33 new dwellings, three new shops and two new offices plus associated works, to include community Photovoltaic Panel system. OUR RURAL FUTURE GROUP: At the last Arlington Parish Council meeting, the public present expressed concern over the ongoing preferred option within the Wealden Local Plan for over 5,000 houses proposed for Arlington Parish. A flyer has been produced by a group of villagers who fear ‘that the short-sighted haste of the current political push to build housing at any cost and with unprecedented speed will have devastating environmental and social consequences for the future of Arlington and Upper Dicker.’ Further details of the Our Rural Futures group may be found at:

ARLINGTON PARISH COUNCIL: The next Arlington Parish Council meeting will be held on September 15 at 7.30pm in Arlington Village Hall. However, as the council resolved to invite Wealden District Council to this meeting, the start time may be 7pm to allow for an extended public session. Confirmation of the start time will be in next week’s column and on the parish council’s website. A planning application from Bede’s School WD/2016/1780 will be discussed by councillors for land south of Michelham Priory Road, Bede’s School, Upper Dicker, BN27 3QH proposing residential development comprising 14 dwellings (of which five will be affordable) along with parking, access and landscaping. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: If you have any time to volunteer during the week (if you are a gardener) or at weekends (if you could help as a house steward or in the Priory shop), Michelham Priory would love to hear from you. YOGA CLASSES: The Yoga class is held every Monday in Arlington Village Hall from 3pm to 4.15pm. It is open to all levels as the yoga taught here can be adapted to suit most individual needs and abilities. Since starting the class in 2015, there is now a group of a dozen ‘regulars’ who have made steady progress. It is enjoyable, informative and fun. To book: Email: [email protected]

MEN’S BREAKFAST: On Saturday, September 10 at 9am a Men’s breakfast will be held in the Village Shop, Upper Dicker. Join David, the Vicar and others for a short talk, time for a chat and a scrumptious breakfast. The breakfasts will be held monthly and in September David will be talking about his Life in Cars.

QUIZ NIGHT: A Quiz Night will be held on Saturday, September 10 in Upper Dicker Village Hall, 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Quizmaster Stuart Higgins. Tickets are £7.50 which includes supper (two courses) with tea or coffee. Please bring your own other drinks. Teams are up to six players. HEDGE-LAYING COMPETITION: On Saturday, September 10, the Laughton and District Agricultural Society’s annual competition will be hosted by Peter and Jackie Appleton. Spectators are welcome and the entrance is opposite Raylands Farm, Tye Hill Lane.

BARN DANCE: A Barn Dance will be held on September 10 at Bluebell Barn, Bates Green Farm. Tickets at £7 are available from the Bluebell Farm Shop.

HARVEST THANKSGIVING: On Sunday September 25 starting at 11am there will be a Harvest Thanksgiving at Michelham Priory. Join the congregation for worship and apple picking.

LIONS DOG SHOW: On Sunday September 25, the Lions Dog Show will be taking place throughout the day in Upper Dicker Village Hall. Further details will follow.

AGM: On Friday September 30, the Dicker Residents’ Association AGM will start at 7.30pm in Upper Dicker Village Hall. In addition to discussion on planning matters and other issues, up to six committee members are elected. Do come along to the meeting.

DICKER COPSE WORK PARTY: A work party will be held in the Dicker Copse on Sunday November 13, from 10am to noon when excess blackthorn and brambles will be cut back. A small hedge pack has been requested from the Woodland Trust. It is hoped that a few Hazel saplings can be planted to fill a gap in the Copse and that a few hawthorn and dog rose plants can improve the hedgerow. Volunteers are very welcome.
