Arlington & Berwick

LITTER PICKS: At the Arlington Parish Council meeting on April 21, it was reported that a number of residents from Arlington have, over the last four weeks, conducted two litter picks covering the lanes from Chilver Bridge Road cross roads through Arlington Village and along Primrose Farm on Caneheath. During these litter picks they collected 100 bags of general litter and many additional items which included large bits of moulded plastic from various vehicles, a child's car seat, car tyres, three televisions, a fridge and two bags containing the rotting body of a dog. They also collected dozens of empty half bottles of vodka and many empty beer cans scattered along the entire length of the area which suggests that some drivers would not pass a drink-drive breathalyser test and this, with speeding, is a lethal combination.

It was requested, on behalf of the litter pickers, that the parish council writes to the local police suggesting in the strongest possible terms that random breathalyser tests be carried out at Caneheath and/or Chilver Bridge Road on occasional Friday and Saturday evenings and also on dates when there are speedway meetings at Arlington Stadium both of which will hopefully act as a deterrent.

ROADWORKS: There are several planned roadworks in both Berwick and Arlington over the next three months. These will involve some road closures: May 13 to 17, Wilbees Road, The Street Arlington, water maintenance, traffic lights; May 16 to 18, Station Road Berwick, level crossing maintenance, road closure; June 1 to 3, The Street Arlington, power services, road closure; July 21 to August 3, Tye Hill Lane, duct work, possible road closure.

BLUEBELL WALK: Arlington Village is once again manning the Bluebell Walk on the May Bank Holiday Weekend (Tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday and Monday). Please support this event as this is the major fund raising event of the year.

ALLOTMENTS: An allotment has become available at Upper Dicker. The plot measures a little over four rods and part of it has been recently cultivated. While Arlington Parishioners have priority, residents from neighbouring parishes are also accepted. Cultivating an allotment does require a commitment of a few hours per week. However, the benefits are a year-round supply of organic fruit and vegetables, healthy exercise in a rural location and the chance to make new friends. If you are interested please contact the Parish Clerk, Alison Stevens by e-mailing her at [email protected].

DOG SHOW: A dog show will be held in Upper Dicker Village Hall on Sunday, stating at noon. Entries for classes taken from 11.30am. Lots of classes including fun and novice classes. Refreshments available.

VILLAGE MARKET: On Tuesday, between 10am and 11.30am in Arlington Village Hall there will be a Village Market with a variety of stall including home baking, traditional bread and refreshments.
