“The address was contained in order to prevent any danger to the public and contact was made with the man,” police said.

At 7pm he left the address and attempted to get into a vehicle parked outside, police said. Armed officers arrested him.

A police spokesman said: “A man was arrested without anyone being injured and without any shots being fired, 80 minutes after police were called to a report of a man with a gun at a property in Warnham.

“The weapon has been seized and it is confirmed to be an air rifle.”
