At Annecy, firebugs set light to storage sheds and flames spread to the main hall, damaging windows and curtains.

Sub officer Cliff Barron-Carter said: 'This was a deliberate fire, it was no accident.'

At the same time a second fire engine went to Seaford Head lower school where a fire had been started in rubbish bins and spread to the main buildings.

Mr Barron Carter said: 'The school boiler room was quite seriously damaged and there was minor damage to the kitchen.'

Both fires were put out by 9.30pm. Police found no trace of the culprits.
