Arts college will benefit town

OPPORTUNITIES for involving local people in the arts could be significantly improved if an important development in Heathfield is successful, says community college headteacher Rob Robinson.

OPPORTUNITIES for involving local people in the arts could be significantly improved if an important development in Heathfield is successful, says community college headteacher Rob Robinson.

Mr Robinson said the college's Arts College bid, if successful, would link 'a whole range of local organisations in improving the provision for the arts'.

He said: 'Our bid to become a specialist Arts College, if successful, should secure as much as 200,000 for community projects which allow local groups to work with the college.

'We are developing the bid with our local primary schools, but have also been in touch with local drama, dance and music groups.'

He said the funds would be spent on 'extending the performance area in the college', as well as purchasing equipment for use by local groups, and supporting weekend and summer activities.

A college spokesman said: 'The college's ongoing commitment to Lifelong Learning for All will form part of this initiative. It is hoped to develop the facilities in the youth centre situated in the heart of town and already used by a range of local groups during the day.'

Mr Robinson added: 'There has been some misunderstanding in the community over the Arts College bid. The college curriculum will not be radically affected and the emphasis upon subjects like maths, science, English and technology will remain. The extra funds as much as 600,000 over three years will allow us to enhance the provision in the arts without affecting other subjects.'

As part of the bid, the college has to raise 50,000 in the local community. Dick Brown, who is leading the project, said: 'The pupils, parents and staff have worked incredibly hard to raise about 29,000 in less than three months. The range of activities, from sponsored walks to quiz nights and auctions of promises has been incredible. However, we still have some way to go.'

Anybody who can help is asked to contact Dick at the college on 01435 866066 as soon as possible.
