Arts programme is first of its kind in Rustington

Local artists Deirdre Carolin and Lyn Leese, organisers of Art in the Garden Room, are excited their not-for-profit project will be able to offer workshops throughout 2017.

“To our knowledge, it is the first arts programme of its type ever available in Rustington and want to ensure its availability to as wide as audience as possible,” they said.

The expansion of the programme follows the success of Summer Art in the Garden Room, which ran on Wednesday mornings last August in the newly-refurbished Garden Room behind Rustington Museum.

Deirdre said: “These sessions aim to provide tuition for all ages and abilities in a fun and friendly environment.

“Building on the success of this venture, it is planned to form links with Rustington Museum by exhibiting work that has been produced in the workshops, thus raising the profile of arts in the community.”

The workshops, covering a wide range of arts and crafts, are run by Lyn and Deirdre, who are volunteering their time to enable it to be a non-profit venture.

Arts and crafts ranging from felt making, stitching and printing through to collage, crochet and weaving are offered for all ages and levels of experience, with all materials, and refreshments, provided.

The aim is to promote arts and crafts in the village, establish regular art events for all and bring people together to be creative and to have fun.

The workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities over five years of age but all children must be accompanied by an adult.

The project is sponsored by Rustington Community Partnership and this year’s workshops launch on Sunday, March 19, with card and picture making on a spring and Mother’s Day theme.

Easter-themed workshops on April 8 and 9 will be followed by an exhibition at the museum on April 11.

There will be knitting on May 28, summer arts on June 17, abstract design on July 26.

Workshops continue on select dates each month all through the year.

Booking is required as space is limited. Charges are £10 for adults, £5 for children aged up to 16, £2.50 for additional children in the same family. Forms are available at the library, museum, information centre and parish council office.
