Arun council workers get on their bikes for new route

A NEW seafront cycle route was tested by council workers this week.

Staff from Arun District Council joined the cabinet member for economic and cultural development, Norman Dingemans, on Littlehampton’s Promenade on Tuesday.

Arun asked West Sussex County Council to install the shared surface in January, following requests made in the council’s Seafront Strategy consultation.

A later survey also found 82 per cent of respondents would like to be able to cycle along the Promenade.

“I’m very keen to see as many people as possible out using this new cycle route,” said Mr Dingemans.

“It provides both cyclists and pedestrians with some stunning seafront views on their journeys between Littlehampton and Rustington and is a much safer way of travelling between the two places.”

The route runs from the River Arun to Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre and can be used by both cyclists and pedestrians. A new central reservation installed at the swimming centre allows pedestrians to cross safely.

Mr Dingemans added: “Our tourism website, www.sussexbythesea.com, has lots of information about cycling in the district, as well as details of cycle purchase and cycle hire shops.”
