Arun recycling hits record level

Recycling rates in Arun have hit a record level in the past month.

An average 40 per cent of total waste '“ more than 1,700 tonnes '“ was sent for reprocessing rather than to landfill sites.

This response of residents to Arun District Council's recycling drive means they are some of the top green stars in the country. The amount being recycled is 10 per cent above the national target.

Arun's recycling service, run by contractor Verdant, was voted the best in West Sussex in a customer survey. It ranks in the top 25 per cent of the country's district and borough councils.

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, in charge of refuse and recycling services, said: 'This is great news for everyone who has worked so hard to make recycling a success in Arun.

'On behalf of the council, I would like to say a big '˜thank you' to everyone who's doing their bit for the environment by recycling their household and garden waste.

'It is fantastic to see the community responding so positively, with their efforts.'
