Arundel blooms for Olympic Duncan

TORRENTIAL rain looked set to ruin Arundel's In Bloom bid, but the sun came out just in time: and the water was no threat to the special guest.

Olympic swimmer Duncan Goodhew was at the town hall today (Tuesday, July 14) to meet judges Reg Harrison and Lindsay Thomas, as well as members of the committee that made it all possible.

Yapton-born Duncan said: "I love In Bloom because it is something that encourages people to really look after their communities and environment, and create a nice place to live.

"It's very competitive though; I thought the Olympics were competitive!"

He added that he had been involved with In Bloom for about seven years, and that he thought Arundel was "stunning".

"I think it has a slight advantage, because it is such a beautiful town!"

Committee members woke on Tuesday morning to find the heavens open, and started worrying.

Mike de Lara, of the group, said: "It was panic, panic, panic! But the sun came out and it was a beautiful day.

"I think we have succeeded even if we don't win. The real achievement is the community coming together.

"Of course a gold or silver medal would be great, but is secondary."

He added that the campaign had been a year-round commitment, by residents, the committee, the local garden association, schools and community groups.

Reg and Lindsay would not give much away, and said everyone would have to wait until September for the results.

"We are looking for horticultural achievement, community involvement and sustainability," added Lindsay.
