Arundel cricket pavilion to serve as café

ARUNDEL Cricket Club has been given permission to use its pavilion, pictured above, as a café, in spite of an objection from the town council over road safety over the location, next to the busy A27 Chichester Road.

The club can now run a café in the building from Monday to Friday, after last week’s meeting of Arun District Council’s development control committee granted planning permission.

Councillors were told the town council objected on the grounds “that the additional vehicular activity associated with the increased use of the club would have an adverse impact upon the safe and efficient operation of this part of the strategic road network”.

However, the Highways Agency, which is responsible for the A27 trunk road, said it considered that, subject to changes being made to the access onto the site, the likely increase in the number of vehicles turning into and leaving the cricket ground was considered acceptable.

The committee approved the plans, including a condition that before the use as a café could begin, a detailed plan, showing that vehicles entering the ground could pass vehicles as they were leaving, should be submitted to Arun for approval, after consulting with the Highways Agency.

A new hoarding sign advertising the café was also approved in spite of the town council claiming it would distract drivers.
