Arundel Festival is on the up with balloon trips

SEEING Arundel in a new light is exactly what is on the cards during this month’s festival.

Hot-air balloon rides have been introduced at this year’s Arundel Festival and will be sending visitors soaring – with joy and amazement.

The trips launch from the meadows, off Mill Road, and last approximately 45 minutes. Those taking part will be lifted to a dizzying height of 1,500ft and will get to see parts of Arundel hidden from those on the ground.

Kate Vigurs was one of the lucky few invited to ride in the festival balloon and said it was an experience that she would never forget.

The 36-year-old, who was taking part in the jousting tournament at Arundel Castle, was dressed in full mediaeval attire for the trip, along with colleague Max Knegjens, from the Netherlands.

“It was absolutely amazing. The views were absolutely stunning,” she said.

“It was a very slow ascent, which really took me by surprise. I didn’t realise how slowly it would rise.

“But as it went up I just felt other-worldly. It was such a serene and surreal experience.”

Kate, who lives in West Yorkshire, added that she could see for miles around.

“It was such a perfect day. The sun was setting and the skies were clear and blue.

“I could see Brighton Pier twinkling in the distance. Looking down I saw all the surrounding villages and towns near Arundel, too.

“I also saw parts of the castle’s battlements that you can’t see from ground level, so that was really special.”

Flights are available to book throughout the festival and will be co-ordinated by members of the British School of Ballooning.

They will take place from Saturday. August 18, and on 19, 25, 26 and 27, weather dependent.

Tickets for the trip are £130 per adult and £80 for children aged between seven and 11.

Places are limited and can be booked on 01428 707307.

Kate added: “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and one that I would recommend to anyone.”
