Arundel road train success

EASTER visitors to Arundel were the first to use the town's new land train service between the shops and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.

And its first weekend of operating was a great success as visitors took the weight off their feet and piled into the carriages.

Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust centre manager James Sharpe is delighted with the new road train service: "We are a mile away from the shops, so the road train is a great help for people who may have come to Arundel on public transport and don't want to walk all that way."

He said he hoped the train would also be used by people with cars to help make the roads less congested during busy times. "It's nice for me because it makes a more sustainable transport option. This is something I am painfully aware of."

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is also offering a discount to its visitors who arrive by road train to cover their fare, which effectively means they enjoy free transport to the spectacular nature reserve.

The train can carry 60 paying passengers at a time, with provision for a number of wheelchairs, and will run frequently between the two places throughout the summer season.

Although it was just plain white at the weekend, it will soon be painted in English heritage green with gold coach lines, to reflect its special status as Arundel's land train.
