Mrs May, who has been the MP for Maidenhead since 1997, was speaking at a conference held by the Arundel and South Downs Conservative Association, at Arundel Castle.

About 150 people attended the evening, including the Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert – who had worked closely with Mrs May as police minister before being sacked in 2012.

After the event, Mr Herbert said: “It was tremendous for local party members and supporters to be able to meet such a senior member of the Government and to hear her speak.

“I think everyone was very heartened by the Home Secretary’s optimistic message. Arundel Castle is a superb venue, so all in all this was a great boost for West Sussex Conservatives.”

During the night the Home Secretary spoke of the ‘tough decisions’ needed to reduce the deficit left by the previous Labour government, and the coalition’s measures that she claimed would ‘safeguard the British economy’.

Mrs May also spoke about the progress made in reforming the welfare system and the action that her department had taken to reduce immigration.
