Arundel volunteer given award

IMAGINE giving up almost 1,500 Monday nights as a volunteer.

Hazel Sampson has done just that, over the past 37 years of running Arundel Brownies.

And now her remarkable commitment has been recognised with a Community Hero award, presented by local radio station Spirit FM, at its Local Heroes awards ceremony.

During that time, on 1,480 Monday evenings, Hazel has helped a total of more than 400 girls, aged seven to 10, enjoy going to Brownies each week.

She has helped with fun activities including adventures, outdoor activities, theme nights, parties, crafts, singing and games, to name but a few.

She also takes the girls on a week’s camp each year, with occasional sleep-overs, too. Hazel was nominated for the award by Rachel Stanford and Arundel Guides and was presented with the award at the Hilton Avisford Park Hotel.

Rachel, a leader with Arundel Guides, said: “Hazel has given most of her life to Guiding and really deserves this recognition.”

Hazel was accompanied by Rachel to the awards ceremony, which included a performance by the singer Beverley Knight. They were joined by Spirit FM’s Ian Crouch, Simon English and the team from South Coast Skips (sponsors of the award) on their table.
