Arun’s street team walk for charity

BLISTERS and aching feet did not deter two hardy council workers, who abandoned their work vans and walked the streets of Arun to raise money for charity.

Paul Penfold, 45, and Bill d’Alson, 57, who help to keep the district’s streets spick and span, presented a cheque for more than £1,000 to Christine Kallend, a representative of Help for Heroes, on Thursday.

The two members of Arun’s street scene team walked more than 12 miles on one of their daily patrols in the district, and said they were “delighted” with their achievement.

They began their trek at 9am last Wednesday, setting off from Sea Lane, Ferring, before finally calling it a day six hours later, in Aldwick. During their round, they carried out their usual day-to-day tasks, such as dealing with fly tipping, abandoned vehicles and other waste and environmental issues.

They were supported by their colleagues at Arun Civic Centre, Littlehampton, who were doing their bit to raise money by selling home-made cakes.

The grand total raised was an impressive £1,184.24 for the charity, set up in 2007 to help wounded servicemen and women returning from active service.

Paul and Bill decided to raise money for Help for Heroes as it was particularly close to both of their hearts. Bill served in the RAF for 18 years before taking up a job at the council, and Paul’s father-in-law served in the Royal Navy for 34 years.

Paul said: “My feet were really aching afterwards. We stopped for a break at Felpham and found it hard to get going again, but made it through.

“I’m really pleased with the amount we raised for charity; it was more than I anticipated, so I’d like to thank everyone who supported us.” Bill added: “We had a welcome pint at the end – it went down very well. I’m delighted with how it all went and I am looking forward to organising something bigger for next year.” The dynamic duo are now thinking of organising a fun day for next year’s fund-raising efforts.
