Asda: 'Arun council has failed us'

Furious Bognor Regis Chamber of Commerce leader Nick Stuart Nicolson has called the decision to turn down Asda a disgrace.

"Common sense did not prevail. This was a seriously important decision for the future of Bognor. Arun have failed us.

"The district council have lost a golden opportunity to kick start the Oldlands Farm development," he commented.

"This wasn't just about Asda. This was the perfect opportunity to commence work on the site and to bring vital employment to Bognor.

"Not only have we now lost the 500 or so Asda jobs, but also the potential for many more hundreds of jobs. I feel Oldlands Farm will probably now never be developed."

He described the scenes outside the council chamber immediately after the 'no' vote as ugly.

He stated: "I witnessed considerable disappointment and a consequent lack of confidence in the district council.

"There is now a groundswell of no confidence in the decisions made at the Arun Civic Centre. Public opinion in Arun counts for absolutely nothing."
