PARISH COUNCIL: The recent Parish Council election failed to produce enough nominations to force a ballot. This has left 2 vacant seats on the council, one for Ashburnham and one for Penhurst. The two vacancies must be filled by the Parish Council co-opting people. PLANT SALE: Ashburnham and Penhurst Gardening Club are holding a plant sale tomorrow, May 23 at Ashburnham Sports Field, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. This is your opportunity to stock up on a variety of plants including vegetables, herbs and flowers. There will also be refreshments, garden supplies and a raffle.

MOBILE LIBRARY: The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in Ashburnham (by the chapel) on Tuesday, May 26, 2.40 p.m. - 3 p.m.

BOOK GROUPS: The May book is “Pigeon English” by Stephen Kelman. The story is about Harrison Opoku, a 7-year old boy newly arrived in England from Nigeria. When one of his school- friends is murdered, Harrison’s action unwittingly endangers his mother and sister. The evening group will meet on May 26, 8 p.m. at Ashburnham Place whilst the afternoon group will meet on May 29, 2 p.m. The June book is “Snowdrops’ by A. D. Milller. Set in Moscow, ‘Snowdrops’ is the name Russians give to the bodies which emerge into the light when the ice and snow thaw in the Spring. Some were drunks, some were homeless, some were murder victims. This is a novel of moral ambiguity, danger and uncertainty. the afternoon group will meet on June 26 at 2 p.m., whilst the evening group will meet on June 30, 8 p.m. at Ashburnham Place. CHAPEL COFFEE MORNING: Ashburnham Chapel are holding a coffee morning on May 25 and June 22, 10.30 a.m. - 12 p.m. All are welcome to join them.

GARDENING CLUB: There is no Gardening Club meeting this month.

CHAPEL ANNIVERSARY: To celebrate the anniversary of the Chapel, there will be a celebratory tea on May 31, commencing at 5 p.m. This will be followed by a Songs of Praise service at 6.30 p.m. with music from The Sovereign Band. COFFEE MORNING: The next Coffee Morning is on Monday, June 1 & 15 in the Church Hall, Ashburnham Place 10.30 a.m. - 12 p.m. You are welcome to go along for a good friendly chat.

PUB QUIZ: The Ash Tree Inn are holding their next Pub quiz on June 2, at 7.45 p.m. Entry is £1/person and a set meal of £5 can be ordered. Please call them on 892104 for further details.

P.A.N.T.S: You are invited to Tea with P.A.N.T.S (Penhurst and Ashburnham New Theatrical Society), on June 7, 2.30 - 2.30 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion. Adult £4, children £2 to include sandwiches, tea (with refill), scones and cake. There will also be a raffle.

2M@1: 2m@1 are next meeting on Monday, June 8. The speaker in June will be John Pearse with ‘An Unusual Career: Part 2.’ Everyone is welcome to join the group.

VILLAGE HALL: The Annual General Meeting of the Village Hall Management Committee will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall. At this meeting the committee will formally note that the new hall project is now the sole preserve of the Parish Council who have announced that they will set up a sub committee of the PC to run the project. All members of the public are welcome to attend.

WI: Ashburnham & Penhurst WI are meeting on Monday, June 15, 7.30 p.m. at the Pavilion. This months meeting is their birthday party! The ‘Pink Party‘ will celebrate both the group’s 8th birthday and also 100 years of of the WI! Ladies of the villlages are invited to join them for a bring-and-share supper. VILLAGE LUNCH: The next Village Lunch is on June 17, at Ashburnham Village Hall, 12.30 p.m. Lunch is cooked every month for any older residents in the villages who would like a bit of company and a delicious meal.
