ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: The Annual Assembly of the electors of Ashburnham & Penhurst (to give it its correct title) will take place on St George’s Day, Thursday April 23, 2015 at the Village Hall. You are invited to go along at 6 p.m. for some refreshments before the business part of the meeting starts at about 6.45 p.m. All the organisations in the village have been invited to go and show off what they do and the Village Hall Committee are anxious that as many people as possible go and look at the proposals for a new hall before the ballot on Election Day, May 7. In the business part of the meeting, the Parish Council will give an account of itself and, if the previous two years are anything to go by, this will be a popular social event.

BOOK GROUPS: The April book is “The True Deceiver” by Tove Jansson. (yes, she’s the Moomintroll woman, but this is a grown-up novel). This study of human character, tinged with menace, tells of the relationship between two strong women: a young sharp outsider and a wealthy elderly illustrator. Readers are left to decide for themselves who is deceiving whom. The afternoon group will meet on April 24, 2 p.m. at Ashburnham Place whilst the evening group will meet on April 28, 8 p.m. If you would like to borrow the book or would like further information about either group, please contact Nicole on 894208 or Nicky on 892474.

THROUGH TREES AND TIME: Peter Miles will be repeating this walk on the Sunday mornings of April 26 and May 3. Although it concentrates on a small area of neighbouring Mountfield, the walk features the old Sow Trail (Sow Lane) through the woods and fields from Panningridge Furnace in Penhurst to Robertsbridge. The walk will also cover woodland archaeology, medieval earthworks, other industrial remains, woodland craft, local botany including a very rare plant and an even rarer tree, foraging (with recipes), and more. The cost is £7.50 per person towards the early Norman church of All Saints, Mountfield. To book, or for more details, contact Peter on [email protected] or 01580 880614.
