WI REMEMBERS: As this year is the centenary of the outbreak of World War I, and to make sure that the villages play an appropriate part in the national act of remembrance, Ashburnham and Penhurst WI decided to ask their members to make poppies for a unique and permanent wreath for the war memorial. In May members stitched, knitted and quilted poppies during their regular meeting. Following this, a small group of members got together on several occasions to finish the sewing and fix the poppies to the wreath. One member embroidered onto black ribbon all the names of those from the Villages who were killed in the First and Second World War and these were attached to the wreath. After the ceremony, the wreath will be placed in Ashburnham Church where it will be on display for a short time before being carefully stored so that it can be used in future years. The wreath was praised by many who attended the Remembrance Day service at the War Memorial on Sunday November 9. To mark the Centenary of the First World War, the monthly Parish Magazine has included excerpts from the 1914 Parish Magazines. Each month an extract from that same month 100 years ago has been reproduced, including a description of a Sunday School outing, the first men from the Villages to go off to war and the efforts made at home to keep them in warm socks and other items of clothing made by villagers. These articles have helped bring the names on the War Memorial alive again for a new generation of villagers.

COFFEE MORNING: The next Coffee Morning is on Monday, November 17 in the Church Hall, Ashburnham Place 10.30 a.m. - 12 p.m. You are welcome to go along for a good friendly chat.

WI: Ashburnham & Penhurst WI are meeting on Monday, November 17, 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall. This month you can learn how to create some amazing (really amazing!) floral decorations for Christmas, with demonstrations from Sandra Shoobridge. No need to book – just go along! Visitors and new members are always welcome.

VILLAGE LUNCH: The next Village Lunch is on November 19 at Ashburnham Village Hall, 12.30 p.m. Lunch is cooked every month for any older residents in the villages who would like a bit of company and a delicious meal. MOBILE LIBRARY: The East Sussex County Council Mobile Library service will next be in Ashburnham (by the chapel) on Thursday, November 20, 9.50 a.m. - 10.10 a.m.

CHAPEL COFFEE MORNING: Ashburnham Chapel are holding a coffee morning on November 24, 10.30 a.m. - 12 p.m. All are welcome to join them.

GARDENING CLUB: The Ashburnham and Penhurst Gardening Club are next meeting on November 24, 7.30 p.m. This month they will be holding their AGM, followed by Jim Payne with “Tales from the Potting Shed’. WREATH MAKING: Ashbburnham Place are holding a Christmas wreath making workshop on November 26 & 29, 9.30 a.m. - 1 p.m., at Ashburnham Place. Jim and Jay from the Garden Team will shoe you hoe to make a beautiful Christmas wreath for your front door. All materials and refreshments are included in the cost of £20 per person. P.A.N.T.S: Penhurst and Ashburnham New Theatrical Society (P.A.N.T.S.) presents Sleeping Beauty at Ashburnham Cillage Hall. Performances will be on: Thursday November 27, Friday November 28 and Saturday November 29 at 7.30 p.m. There will also be an afternoon performance on the Saturday at 2.30 p.m. Tickets go on sale on November 1 costing £7/adult, £3/child. AFTERNOON BOOK GROUP: The afternoon book group are next meeting November 28, 2pm. October’s book is “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. Death is the narrator of this story, set in Nazi Germany. It’s the story of the inhabitants of Himmel Street, especially of nine year old Liesel living with a foster family, who steals books. CHRISTMAS FAYRE: Ashburnham & Penhurst WI are holding their annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday, December 6. This will be held at Ashburnham Village Hall, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. There will be local produce, seasonal stalls and a raffle along with WI refreshments and much more.
