Mrs Sheard has decided to do her own baking again thanks to the extra storage space and new worktops which have been installed in her flat in Olivier Court.

The work saw it become the 1,000th Arun District Council home to be improved to meet the government's decent homes standard under a contract with Connaught Homes.

Mrs Sheard, 82, has lived in the flat in Chichester Road for two years. She said: "I can't compare my new kitchen with my old one. It's a different class altogether. It encourages me to go in and do some baking. I didn't have the work surfaces before to do that. "

Robin Brown, who is in charge of Arun's housing and community care work, said: "The 1,000th refurbishment is a significant milestone in our decent homes works programme which has seen more than 8m spent on bringing properties up to the decent homes standard."
