'Avoid Brighton seafront' public told, as cause of hotel gas alarm investigated

The area around the Harbour Hotel on Kings Road was sealed off after a gas alarm sounded this afternoon (April 23).

Buses and drivers have been diverted away from the A259 Kings Road as emergency services deal with the incident.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Motorists and pedestrians are being urged to avoid Brighton seafront from Madeira Drive to West Street.

"Please stay away from this area, due to an ongoing incident.

"Six appliances were mobilised to a hotel in King’s Road, following reports of smoke and a gas alarm sounding at 12.30pm.

"There are no reports of any casualties.

"Crews are currently investigating the cause and while this is being carried, a section of the road along the seafront has been closed, causing congestion.

"Drivers are being urged to stay away from the area and to use an alternative route."

Update: ESFRS said fire crews left the scene at 4.35pm.
